Home Elevators with Automatic Door Locking & Detection

Synopsis

Home elevators with automatic door locking and detection from Nibav Lifts USA ensure doors stay securely locked during travel. Smart sensors detect proper door closure, preventing movement unless fully sealed delivering safer, smoother, and worry-free vertical mobility.

What is an automatic closing door lock system?

Automatic door lock system is a crucial control safety feature that prevents a home elevator from moving until all of its doors have closed fully, are mechanically locked on the track, and are confirmed closed electronically. In a home, once an elevator moves, its doors must be fully closed and cannot shift open. Therefore, the automatic door lock system only accepts “travel commands” when the elevator has “completed the door closure” verification or confirmation.

At Nibav USA, we have developed a unique movable door interlock system that is a component of the elevator’s digital control system. This means that there are locking devices fitted to each cabin and landing door installed together with position sensors on the doors to confirm that the door is closed completely and latched. If any of the cabin doors are not secured, the control processor will not allow movement of the elevator.

The automatic closing door lock system therefore produces a “fail-safe” travel condition, whereby cabin movement cannot take place until all passenger compartments are closed and securely fastened, thereby preventing users from coming in contact with the elevator shaft or being exposed to movement with the door open.

Why is this important?

Door issues are one of the top two ways people are killed or injured in elevator operations.  When an elevator is in motion, if there is a door that opens, or if the door has not been fully locked, this creates multiple risks, including:

  • Exposing passengers to the elevator shaft
  • Objects falling into the elevator hoistway
  • Sudden stops and/or faults in the elevator cabin
  • Injuries when entering or exiting the elevator cabin

Automatic door locking and automatic door detection eliminate these hazards by ensuring the elevator cannot move until all of the doors are secured.  This feature is particularly important for residential homes that may include young children, seniors or pets as it prevents the doors from being opened quickly or accidentally being left open while the elevator is operating.  Nibav’s system ensures that safety is not dependent upon user behavior, and instead the elevator itself enforces a safe condition before allowing elevator movement.

Who needs this?

The ideal homeowners are those looking for a home elevator with automatic door locking and automatic door detection will be:

1. Families with young children

Children will not be able to open or interfere with the doors when they are travelling in the elevator.

2. Seniors and other mobility impaired users

Doors can remain stable and secured during loading and traveling.

3. Homes that have pets

Prevents pets from entering and/or exiting while the elevator is travelling.

4. Luxury residences

Luxury residences will require safety systems that operate silently and reliably.

5. Multi-story houses that are frequently used

Houses that are being used frequently will have a greater need for stronger safeguards against door-related accidents.

Technical details

The door locking & detection system is part of the safety and control network for Nibav USA elevators.

1. Mechanically and electrically engaged door locks

Every door will have a lock-side mechanical latch & electrical locking solenoid. As the doors close, the mechanically engaged locks will prevent the doors from moving until the electronic system releases the locks.

2. Door position sensing devices

Precision contact & proximity sensors are used for:

  • Closed door position
  • Lock engaged status
  • Door alignment between cabin & landing

All of the data collected by the sensors will be transmitted to the control processor in ‘real-time.’

3. Interlocking logic

The control system uses interlocking logic to require every door sensor to “vouch” for each other before elevator travel will be allowed. If only one of the doors does not have confirmation of being locked, the elevator will not move.

4. Failure detection

If a door has either been forced open or is misaligned or does not latch properly, the system will switch into safety mode to prevent elevator operation until the problem is fixed.

5. Emergency override

In the event of an emergency such as power outage, Nibav’s battery back-up & emergency descent system allows for the un-locked door to only be opened when the cabin of the elevator is safely resting on a landing.

Frequently asked questions

1. Will the elevator operate if there is a slightly open door?

No. The detection system will only permit elevator travel if the door is fully closed & locked.

2. Can a door be opened while the elevator is in motion?

No. The mechanical locks will keep the door closed until the cabin has stopped at a suitable landing.

3. Is this designed to be safe for children and pets?

Yes. The system will prevent accidental or dangerous door operation.

4. Will this change the speed of elevator operation?

No. The locking & detection occur automatically and instantaneously.

5. Is this a feature of all Nibav USA elevators?

Yes. Automatic door locking & detection systems are built into Nibav’s core safety architecture.
